What Is Suspension System
The system encompasses a lot of different parts that can include the struts, sway bars and shocks. In the earlier days of car development, suspension systems were not very complex since most of the vehicle’s weight, including the engine, sits in the rear axle. Steering was a simple matter of pivoting the whole front axle. Modern cars have their engine up front; this means that complex suspension and steering systems needs to be developed. Modern cars have come a long way, and modern suspensions have increased durability, strength, safety and comfort.
A fact worth mentioning, most performance drivers will tell you that a stock suspension of your car is not something to be desired at. Unless you are driving a Porsche or Corvette which has great suspension systems right off the bat. Though for most vehicles, stock suspensions are only decent at absorbing bumps and navigating on turns and it is easier to lose control to say the least.
Modern Suspension System
In today’s cars, the suspension has two important basic functions. One is to keep the wheels firmly in contact with the terrain at all times and to provide a smooth and comfortable ride as possible. Most of today’s systems rely on springs. These springs compress and rebound evenly to provide an even ride. However, there are instance that the springs do not compress evenly and sway side to side, especially if the up and down compression is prolonged. These undesirable swaying is then reduced by shock absorbers.
